My Story
Hi, my name is Sammy and I know exactly how you feel. Here, I'm going to share my story with you.......
In March 2020 I was living and working in Bangkok as a Biology Teacher, when COVID-19 caused all schools in the country to close. The Thai government had ordered teachers to work from home for the foreseeable future. While listening to the BBC news I heard a health expert talking about the serious risk of weight gain during the pandemic, a statement that triggered that familiar fear inside of me.
​
I began another cycle of restriction and over exercising, and that month my period didn’t come. I went into a state of self blame and punishment, knowing that I had done this to myself AGAIN. I looked in the mirror crying, feeling so alone, isolated and scared, and asked myself, “Why are you still doing this?”.
​
My difficulties with my body image and weight began when I was eight years old. My swimming coach told my Mum, that I was too fat and needed to lose weight. I looked down at my body and for the first time in my life, felt like there was something wrong with me.
​
I grew up in the 80s and 90s, when images of 'heroin chic' women's bodies plastered across magazines, films and TV, reinforced the feeling in me that my body needed to look a certain way; thin. Little did I know that diet culture was brainwashing me to think my self worth was down to how my body looked.
​
​In my late teens, I started skipping meals on Fridays to make sure I had a flat stomach for nights out. My friends used the phrase 'eating's cheating' a lot. In my early twenties at university, I went for days only eating a bit of broccoli and instead fuelling myself with cigarettes and cans of coke. When I did eat, my body was so filled with anxiety that I sometimes made myself sick after meals.
​
For too many years, I was obsessed with weighing myself, convinced that I'd have achieved some sort of remarkable feat by getting to a light body weight. My friends told me to get counselling, but I hated every minute and convinced myself that my situation wasn't that bad. I hid my eating disorder from everyone, including myself, until that lonely evening in Bangkok when I decided enough was enough!
​
With the help of an eating disorder specialist, I learned how to listen to my body, love myself, and break free from restrictive diets and negative thinking. By learning how to eat intuitively, I discovered I could trust my body, let go of control, stop restricting foods I enjoy and remove the critical self-talk that beat me up every day. Today I love my body, eat healthily and finally feel completely free.
