My Journey to Food Freedom and Healing

In this Q&A, I open up about my personal healing journey, from struggling with restriction and diet culture to discovering the transformative power of food freedom. My hope is that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to rebuild trust with their bodies, find balance, and live with greater self-compassion.

My Journey to Food Freedom and Healing

Q: How would I describe my relationship with food and how my journey began?

My relationship with food has been a complex and challenging journey that has led me to my life's purpose. For 20 years, I lived in a restrictive mindset, influenced by societal pressure, diet culture, and childhood comments about my body shape and size. Over time, restriction became obsessive, which developed into an eating disorder in my early 20s.

The detrimental effect it had on my hormonal and metabolic health caused menstrual irregularities, bloating, depression, brain fog, digestive discomfort, and weight gain. I was frustrated, depressed, and needed help.

Q: What was the turning point in my healing journey?

The first and hardest step for me was admitting that I had an unhealthy relationship with food. A visit to the doctor about my menstrual cycle, a blood test, and a prescription for medication to 'kick start' my cycle again left me feeling unseen and unheard. I knew I needed a different approach.

A breakthrough visit to an Ayurvedic doctor enabled me to talk openly for the first time about what I was going through, and I finally felt like I was not alone.

Q: How did Ayurveda and lifestyle changes impact my recovery?

After only two weeks of gentle yoga, following an eating routine that eliminated fasting, increasing warming and grounding foods, reducing excessive exercise, and incorporating breath work to restore balance, I felt an immense physical transformation.

The relief I felt when my period returned was immense, I could finally feel my body rebalancing. I was blown away by how simple it had been to heal my body using such simple food and lifestyle changes.

Q: How did I approach the mental and emotional aspects of recovery?

Tackling the mental impact of my eating disorder was less linear. I had the support of multiple therapists, as well as friends and family, who helped me along the way. One therapist told me that intuitive eating was the ideal place for anyone to reach, to be able to eat food unconditionally, with freedom, and complete trust in my body. At the time, it sounded too good to be true.

However, I am proud to say that now, from a place of recovery and healing my own relationship with food, I am able to help others heal too.

Q: What does food freedom mean to me?

For me, finding food freedom means liberation from the mental prison that so many of us live in due to conditioning by diet culture narratives. It means living an intuitive, wholesome life, one that’s guided by trust, self-compassion, and balance rather than restriction or guilt.

Q: Who have I worked with on this journey?

I feel so fortunate to have had the privilege of working with a wide range of people from all ages, backgrounds, and countries, from friends, family members, and clients in the UK, to teens and teachers during my teaching career, to hundreds of people from across the world at the Orion Healing Centre in Thailand.

Through these experiences, I have continually witnessed the transformational healing power of finding food freedom.

Q: What message would I share with someone struggling with their relationship with food?

You have the power to create a vibrant and healthy life, free from negative body image, critical narratives, and self-punishing behaviour around food. Each one of us has the capacity to heal ourselves, all we need is the knowledge, skills, and support to do it.

That’s where I come in. I truly look forward to working with you to achieve your state of optimal health and vitality, to relieve suffering, and to create the transformation you can feel proud of.
