My Personal Story

Healing Myself

My own relationship with food has not always been easy.  For years I lived in a restrictive mindset, influenced societal pressure to look a certain way, the diet culture of the 90s and comments about my body I had received as a child.  Over time, restricting food and yo-yo dieting had a detrimental effect on my metabolic health and I experienced hormonal imbalances; I lost my period several times, and experienced the bloating, depression, brain fog, digestive discomfort and weight gain that hormonal imbalance brings.

In 2019 I was living and working in Bangkok Thailand. I was feeling very down and suffering with the symptoms above. I went to a see a GP, and she prescribed me synthetic progesterone tablets; I should take them for a few days, and then my period would return.  The following day, I took one and felt terrible. I even had to leave work, feeling discouraged and very desperate to find a solution. That evening I decided not to take the medication again, and instead began the search for a more holistic and natural solution. I had heard of Ayurvedic medicine in my yoga teacher training in 2018, and so researched for any local doctors.

After a thorough assessment, the Ayurvedic doctor prescribed me a detailed plan of food and activity adjustments, which I followed for 2 weeks; including daily gentle yoga, warm and grounding foods, elimination of certain foods, meditation and relaxing breathing exercises.  For the first time I could feel my body rebalancing, and within 2 weeks my period came back, the abdominal weight I gained fell off, I felt energised and a clarity of mind returned.  I was shocked and amazed how these simple food and lifestyle changes had healed my body. It was then that I decided to pursue a career as a nutritionist.

During this experience I learned that food truly is medicine, and that the body has a huge capacity for healing, always striving for equilibrium and health.  I was deeply affected and inspired by my experience, and realised that sharing this message with others was my purpose. I made the decision to leave my 15 year teaching career and I registered for an MSc in Human Nutrition at the University of Surrey.

Healing My Dad

In Dec 2020, I returned to the UK following 3 years living and working in Bangkok as a Biology Teacher.  It had been 12 months since I had seen my parents due to Covid travel restrictions, and so when I saw them for the first time I was shocked to see the change in my Dad; he had gained weight around his abdomen, had puffiness around his cheeks and eyes and lacked his usual vibrancy and sparkle.

At around 9.30pm that evening after we had shared a meal together, I watched my Dad tuck into a microwave pudding and pour custard over it; the equivalent of around 30g of sugar. Although I wasn't a nutritionist at the time, I suspected he was suffering with the symptoms of pre type 2 diabetes.  A subsequent blood test confirmed this, and he was advised by the GP to avoid carbohydrate altogether, and was given a You Tube video to watch.  The video said to cut out carbs completely.

While studying human nutrition at the University of Surrey I learned that this is poor advice, and in fact eating complex carbs that contain fibre, actually helps to regulate blood sugar control.  Now that I am qualified as a Nutritionist, I have been able to guide my Dad back to a place of health, where his symptoms of T2D are completely gone; he has his sparkle back, no longer craves sugary foods, has more energy, wakes up without brain fog, his memory has improved and he is able to choose foods with the empowerment that knowledge brings. I hope that he will continue to thrive in his 70's and far beyond!

Healing The World

I have had the privilege of working with a huge range of people from all backgrounds and countries. I worked as a Detox Consultant at the famous Orion Healing Centre in Thailand for 13 months, where I initially specialised in intuitive eating and eating behaviour.  I saw how transformational the detox and cleanse programme there was for our customers and now incorporate elements of that into my own 'Cleanse & Rebalance Programme'.

More recently my focus has shifted to those with metabolic syndrome.  I have travelled extensively, particularly in Asia, and have seen the epidemic levels of metabolic disease that ultra processed foods, fast foods, poor dietary choices and lack of knowledge have caused. Metabolic syndrome is a condition which indicates the body is struggling with excessive intake of saturated fat, refined sugar and salt, and is a warning that its not coping with the influx of excess energy.  But the good news is that this disease is REVERSIBLE and PREVENTABLE and does not have to be the life sentence towards more serious disease such as heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer's that it is believed to be.

Globally 20-30% of adults have metabolic syndrome, which often is the prerequisite for the most serious killers listed above. My purpose is to support and guide you to heal your body naturally, to educate you to make informed choices and to use dietary and lifestyle changes to eliminate pain and disease, so you can live a long and healthy life. My hope is that you won't need medication ever again.  We all have the capacity to heal ourselves, but we often lack the skills and knowledge to do it.  That is where I come in.  I look forward to working with you to achieve a state of optimal health and vitality.
